Challenge

The news is filled with stories of how AI is taking over different professions, and already there are parts of a teachers job that a machine can do better. My challenge is to explore ways we, as educators, can work to use AI to enhance teaching and learning, whilst continuing to advocate for the parts of our job that are genuinely still better done by a human. This includes the difficult task of accepting that, increasingly, machines are better at parts of our jobs than we are as humans. This matters for two reasons, firstly both students, as our first priority, and educators- with a documented history of long hours and high burn out rates- deserve a system which utilises technology for the best. Secondly, though, it is important that educators, in partnership with engineers, shape the role AI plays in education. This requires us to have a professional dialogue.
