The education system in India is based upon covering a pre determined syllabus over the year because of which students have very little time to do anything else, such as reading non-school books, or interacting with their environment, or expanding their faculty of imagination and inquisitiveness, all of which are helpful in the development of the 'out of the box‘ thinking capability. As an educator, it is an everyday challenge for me to devise innovative methods of teaching in my classroom so that creativity can be fostered effectively in my students. How might we as educators foster creativity amongst our students so that they become creators rather than consumers of information? Current explosion of knowledge, technological revolution have forced attention on the value of creative individuals in promoting growth and welfare of the society. A creative individual may behave in his own way which is distinct from others and thus leaves an impression and influence on others. It is a matter of main concern among lot of educators that our country focuses upon standardised tests which forces the teachers to emphasise on fact learning and rote learning rather than inculcating the ability to be creators and original thinkers. We as educators need to realise the importance of making that extra effort for developing 21st century skills so that our students are better equipped for the real world challenges. The traditional structure of a school is to have a teacher who is the master and the students are expected to listen to them. They are not allowed to express themselves. Realistically, it is only today's creative and talented students who will become tomorrow's political leaders, medical researchers, artists, writers, innovative engineers, and business entrepreneurs. Indeed, this essential talent needs to be valued, identified and cultivated.
